There are many kinds of therapeutic approaches. What is Gestalt?
The objective of Gestalt therapy is to enable you to become more fully and creatively alive. Therapy aims to help you to become free from the blocks and unfinished business from the past that may diminish satisfaction, fulfilment, and growth. Within Gestalt therapy, you will have space to safely explore your experiences without fear of judgment. I will encourage you not simply to talk about your emotions or experiences, but to bring them into the room so that we can process them together.
Gestalt therapy is a method of awareness practice (also called "mindfulness" in other clinical domains). I will challenge you to be aware of what is happening in the here and now. I will not interpret your thoughts and feelings, but rather encourage you to find your own meaning. As you start to understand better your thoughts and behaviours, you will become more aware of other choices that you can make to live your life in a more satisfying way.
Different approaches may suit different clients, but ultimately, whatever therapeutic approach you choose, the most important factor for successful therapy is that the therapist develops a good rapport with you and understands what you feel is troubling you. The skill of the therapist and the quality of the relationship is what determines the outcome of the therapy, not the specific approach of the therapist.
